Countless Runners Achieve Personal Bests on Iconic Downhill Course

AUSTIN, Texas, January 21, 2024 –  Over 6300 runners, representing 46 states and 8 countries, registered for the 30th Anniversary event held on Sunday, January 21st. Athletes traversed the streets of Austin on a course renowned as one of the swiftest 13.1-mile routes in the nation. The day was marked by numerous personal achievements, creating an uplifting atmosphere within the running community. 

“Every year surpasses the last, and this year’s milestone 30th event is truly something special. The PR gong was hit some many times that it actually cracked.,” remarked Stacy Keese, co-owner of High Five Events. “Adding to this year’s celebration, we introduced Blaze, our vibrant new mascot, who has quickly captured the hearts of fans. His presence signifies our ongoing commitment to innovation and community spirit as we step into the next 30 years.”

3M Half Marathon embraced favorable running conditions on its 30th Anniversary year. Reflecting on the event, Dr. Keeli Hanzelka Medical Director for Ascension Seton Event Medicine

said  “As a runner myself, I find great joy in being part of these events. Our team is dedicated to supporting this vibrant community, and the favorable weather today has been a true blessing for all the runners tackling this distance.

Securing victory in the 2024 3M Half Marathon and setting a new personal best was Jordan West of Waco, TX, crossing the finish line in an impressive 1:05:44. Followed by Rohan Sharma Hernandez of Lucas, TX, claiming second place in 1:07:31, while third place went to Rio Reina of Austin, TX, with a finishing time of 1:07:58.

Former University of Texas runner and Austin local, Katie Watson was the first woman across the line 1:15:44. Following Katy was Emily Merriman of Amarillo, TX at 1:16:32, and Rachel Werking of Elm Grove, WI coming across third at 1:18:31.

Participating couple Joe and Bobbie Jo Cardenas, who were first time participants remarked “Our first 3M half marathon was awesome! Everything was set up perfectly from the beginning to the end. It was a great start for getting ready for the Austin Marathon. It made us feel sure we can keep going with our training. We can’t wait to come back next year to try to beat our time and get to ring the gong!”

Blaze takes the form of an ethereal being, a manifestation of pure energy and vibrant colors. When not in motion, Blaze appears as a swirling mass of iridescent mist, constantly shifting and changing. However, when running, Blaze’s form solidifies into a humanoid shape. Their body is composed of wispy flames, pulsating with fiery hues of red, orange, and gold. From their head, a crown of crackling lightning arcs upwards, and their eyes glow with the intensity of a summer sun.

Thousands will chase their 13.1-mile PR on one of the country’s fastest half marathon courses

High Five Events, a premier event production company in the United States, is putting the final touches on the 30th Annual 3M Half Marathon. With over 6,000 enthusiastic participants hailing from 46 states and 8 countries, this year’s edition promises to be a monumental celebration of running prowess. The much-anticipated event is scheduled to unfold on January 21, 2024, in the vibrant city of Austin, Texas.

Participants will receive special 30th-anniversary fully sublimated shirts and iconic swag bags filled with useful 3M products. The Expo & Packet Pick Up will serve as the prelude to the race, setting the stage for the exhilarating journey that lies ahead. All participants will pick up their packets at Palmer Events Center on Friday, January 19 from noon to 7PM and on Saturday from 10AM to 5PM.   

The race commences on Sunday, January 21 at 7:30AM at Gateway Shopping Center in north Austin.  Individual runners will traverse the renowned 13.1-mile course, featuring a 300ft net downhill route while the two-person relay will consist of each runner completing approximately half the distance. The scenic journey will meander through the picturesque Shoal Creek Blvd., the historic Hyde Park neighborhood, and the world-renowned University of Texas at Austin, culminating in a triumphant finish near the Texas State Capitol in downtown Austin. All along the course runners will hear the sounds of 10 live local bands while staying hydrated with Nuun hydration and fueled by GU Energy Labs. 

The 3M Half Marathon Finish Line Festival will be a jubilant celebration of the participants and their remarkable achievements. Those who hit their Personal Record have the opportunity to bang the PR Gong.  Runners will receive their 30th Anniversary spinning finisher medal, enjoy post-race hydration from evamor, and relish a snack bag brimming with H-E-B products and a VERB Energy bar. Super Coffee will be on hand to fuel the positive energy, while those aged 21 and older can partake in the festivities at the EIGHT Beer Garden. Delectable offerings from various food trucks will cater to the culinary cravings of all attendees. The finish line festival promises to be a vibrant gathering of sponsors, exhibitors, volunteers, and partners, united in applauding the triumphs of the dedicated runners.

10 Local Bands to play along course at the 30th Anniversary Event

The upcoming 3M Half Marathon, scheduled for this Sunday, January 21 in Austin, Texas, promises an unforgettable race experience with the finalization of its on-course entertainment lineup. Ten dynamic local bands and a DJ are set to infuse the 13.1-mile course with live music, adding an extra layer of excitement to this point-to-point race.

This year, the 3M Half Marathon proudly presents the following lineup of bands: Austin Taiko (Japanese Drumming), Everett Wren (Fiddler), Inside Out Steel Band (Steel Drum), Kupira Marimba (Zimbabwe Marimba), Austin Thaalam (Indian Drumming), Shirley Johnson (Accordion), The 4411, Woode Wood (Guitar & Harmonia), Stove Top Rangers (Banjo, String Bass, Guitar), Brian MacLeod, and DJ Gatsby in the Finish Line Festival.

Celebrating its 30th Anniversary year, the 3M Half Marathon boasts one of the fastest 13.1-mile courses in the country. Participants will experience a point-to-point route with predominantly downhill running, showcasing some of Austin’s most iconic locations. Starting in north Austin and culminating near the Texas State Capitol, runners will enjoy a 306’ net elevation drop.
